終戦記念日の話題から。

Mr Koizumi made the statement in a speech at a ceremony in Tokyo on Sunday (August 15th) to commemorate the 59th anniversary of the end of World War Two.

"made the statement"の"the"は、この文の直前の文で述べられている首相の声明を指す。普通は"make a statement"の形が多く見られると思う。"make a [動作を表す名詞]"という形をいくつかピックアップ。

上の文には、「記念」を表わす言葉がたくさん使われている。

  • ceremony (公的・国家的な)式典
  • commemorate 記念して後世に伝える

"World War Two"はすべて頭文字が大文字で始まる代わりに、定冠詞が付かない模様。「大文字の事件」は一種の固有名詞か。
"Mr Koizumi"の"Mr"が"Mr."でないのは誤植？　他のページもそうした表記なので、誤植ではないようです。
